Want to know how well a city or town is doing? Ask the local taxi driver.
For example, a Uber driver I met who used to collect nearly $160 a day ($4800 month) now earns around $40 a day ($ 1200 a month). However, his monthly obligations of around $2000 to the bank and others remain the same. So he stands to lose about $800 a month!
He laments that he bought the Lexus just 15 days before the lockdown. Putting on a brave face, he is hopeful that the market will return and he will be able to recover his losses.
After I got off the car, I saw every passing taxi and Lexus and business with a sigh – seeing how companies struggle during this worldwide crisis.
It also got me thinking about who actually pays for all the glitz and glamour some cities portray? Who really drives the economy?
You realize that it’s not the government or big corporations but the small enterprises that absorb the small losses like the taxi driver’s $800 deficit that keeps the economy running.
